독일 출신의 맥스 하틀러는 추상과 구상 그리고 미학적 영역과 사회문제 사이의 경계를 넘나들며 활동 중인 음향 비주얼 아티스트이자 실험적인 애니메이터이다. 하틀러의 작품은 프로토 시네마 형태로서 공간적 성격과 물질적 성격들의 관계성을 유지하고 있다. 특히 그는 정형적이고 구조적인 요소를 활용하여 공간성을 강조하고 있으며 이를 통해 이미지의 지속되고 확장된 실험을 보여준다.
이번 전시에서는 이주의 경험을 통해 드러나는 이미지와 공간에 대한 고찰을 그만의 방식으로 소개한다. 그가 만든 추상 애니메이션은 우리를 세상 밖으로 벗어나게 해줄 어떠한 명상이나 성찰을 할 수 있는 공간을 제시한다. 그리고 구상적인 요소들을 작품에 삽입하여 작가의 생각을 유추할 수 있는 숨은 메시지들을 나열한다. 이는 추상적인 경험과 일상적인 경험 속에서의 변화를 만들어내어 관람객들에게 지금과는 다른 빛깔 속에서 사유하고 성찰할 수 있게 한다.
Max Hattler is German-born Audio-visual artist and experimental animator, working at the boundaries between abstraction and figuration, aesthetics and social issues. Hattler’s practice retains a relationship to the spatial and material characteristics of proto-cinema forms. Especially, this spatial emphasis is expressed through Hattler’s formal and structural references and through this, he shows this sustained and extended experimentation with the animated image.
For this exhibition, it is introduced that his insight into images and space by the experience of migrant. Abstract animations he made has the potential to open a kind of meditative or reflective space that takes you out of the world. Then, by feeding some representational elements back into the work, his hidden messages are embedded. This can make the fluctuation between abstraction and everyday experiences, which can make you think or reflect upon parts of the everyday in a different light.
