유은석은 주로 건축물의 재현을 통해 현대사회와 인간의 관계성을 부각한 작업을 한다. 부유하고 있는 섬 위에 지어진 건축물은 지인의 집이거나, 유명한 건축물, 혹은 실제로 존재하는 건물들의 재현이다. 하지만 그가 표현한 건축물은 우리가 익히 보아오던 보편적인 형태가 아니다. 평평한 땅 위에 단순히 세워진 건물이 아닌 불안정한 지반에 아슬아슬하게 놓인 건물로 초현실적인 형태로 공간 전체를 연출한다. 

가파른 절벽으로 만들어진 섬 덩어리와 쏟아질 것 같은 지반은 공간의 구조를 뒤틀면서 이 상황에 과도하게 누적되어 있는 불안함을 연상하게 한다. 안정과 불안정함이 공존하는 그의 작품들은 단순히 재현이 목적이 아니라 작품을 통해 안정적으로 정착하지 못하고 표류하고 있는 현대인들의 삶에 대한 자각을 제시하고자 한다.

Eunsuk Yoo’s works highlight the relationship between human beings and contemporary society through the representation of architectural forms. The buildings constructed on floating islands are depictions of acquaintances’ houses, iconic architectural landmarks, or real existing structures. However, the buildings he portrays differ from the conventional architectural form we are familiar with. Rather than standing on solid, level ground, they precariously rest on unstable terrain, creating whole space full of surrealistic and dreamlike atmosphere. 

The steep cliffs and collapsing grounds that form these islands distort spatial structures which helps to remind an overwhelming sense of unease accumulated within the scene. In this way, Yoo’s works, where stability and instability coexist, do not simply aim at representation. Instead, they offer an awareness of the lives of modern individuals who drift without a stable sense of belonging.
