이동훈은 식물, 동물, 인물 등을 나무로 조각한다. 기존 정물 조각에서 벗어나, K 팝 아이돌과 그들의 무용 동작을 탐구 주제물로 삼아 새로운 조각을 시도하고 있다. 인체와 그 동세를 포착하는 작업은 움직이지 않는 정물에서와는 다른 분석적 표현방식을 요구한다. 

이번 전시에서 선보이는 작품은 ‘아이돌(NCT U)’의 공연 장면에서 표출되는 다양한 이미지들을 히트곡의 제목과 함께 제시하였다. ‘아이돌’은 현재 한국 대중문화의 상징이면서 한국 문화를 대표하는 문화 요소로서 세계에서 인식되고 있지만, 순수예술을 대표하는 정통 회화와 조각의 영역에서는 잘 다루어지지 않는다. 하지만 이동훈은 대중 이미지에 대한 편견을 뒤집어 새로운 지형에서 대상을 고찰하고 표현하고자 하였다. 이제 예술과 삶의 경계는 모호해졌고, 일상의 영역에서 발췌한 소재들이 기존 예술의 범주를 넘어서 새로운 영역으로 확장해나가는 것을 그의 작품을 통해 알 수 있다.

Donghoon Rhee carves plants, animals, and human figures from wood. He has explored the human form sculpture through subjects drawn from K-pop idols and their dance movements. The act of capturing the body in motion demands a different kind of analysis and expression than that required for static still-life sculpture.

In this exhibition, Rhee presents a series of works inspired by images from the performances of the K-pop group NCT U, accompanied by the titles of their hit songs. As icons of contemporary Korean popular culture, K-pop idols are now recognised globally as symbols of Korean identity. Yet, such imagery seldom appears within the traditional domains of painting and sculpture that define fine art. 

By reinterpreting this popular imagery, Rhee challenges the biases that separate high art from popular culture and seeks to engage with his subjects from a fresh perspective. Now the boundary between art and everyday life has grown increasingly blurred. Through Rhee’s work, we witness how themes drawn from daily life extend beyond established artistic categories, opening new possibilities for contemporary sculpture.
