이창진은 인간의 주변 세계에 존재하고 있는 기본적인 원리들이 어떻게 각자의 삶 속에서 작용하는지 관찰하며 그것의 결과를 시각적으로 표현한다. 다시 말해 너무 익숙해 마치 은폐되어 있는 것처럼 여겨지는 것들을 시각적으로 드러내는 시도를 줄곧 하고 있다. 가령 “물은 항상 수평을 이루고 있다”라는 사실처럼 말이다. 작가는 상징적인 표현을 위해 주변에서 쉽게 구할 수 있는 일상적 오브제이며, 다시 제자리로 돌려놓아도 어색하지 않은 재료로서 페트병과 물을 사용한다. 그리고 수백 개의 투명 생수병에 색이 있는 물을 담고 와이어에 매달아 수평을 만든다. 이것들을 연결하는 와이어는 팽팽한 수직의 선으로 겹쳐지며 수평을 더욱 극적인 초현실적인 장면으로 보이게 한다. 몸과 머리를 숙여 다소곳한 자세를 유지해야만 완벽한 수평의 온전한 작품을 목격할 수 있는 이 지점이 바로 평범한 폐기물에 불과하던 플라스틱 병이 유일무이한 가치의 예술작품으로 변모하는 순간이다. 특별한 의미 없던 일상의 재료가 가치 있는 예술작품이 될 수 있음을 보여주고 있으며, 이 과정을 통해 관람객은 그들의 삶 속에 존재하는 가치 있는 것들에 대한 판단을 재고하게 된다.

Changjin Lee observes how the fundamental principles that exist in the world around us operate within each person’s life, and he visually expresses the results of those observations. In other words, he continually seeks to reveal what is so familiar that it has become almost invisible—like the simple fact that “water always finds its level.”

For his symbolic expression, Lee uses everyday objects such as plastic bottles and water—materials easily found in daily life and natural enough to return to their original place without seeming out of place. He fills hundreds of transparent bottles with colored water and suspends them with wires to create a perfect horizontal line. The wires connecting these bottles overlap into taut vertical lines, turning the horizontal plane into a dramatic, almost surreal scene.

His work shows that ordinary materials without any special meaning can become valuable works of art. Through this transformation, viewers are encouraged to reconsider what they deem valuable in their own lives.
