유미연은 본인 이름 ‘미연 - 아름다운 연꽃’을 기호로서의 언어로 사용하여 자신의 정체성을 표현한다. 작가의 시각언어는 ‘연꽃’을 만들어내는 행위를 기반으로 시작된다. 작가 특유의 기표, 기의적 화법은 작가의 방법론과 결합되고 이러한 과정을 통해 꽃을 거대하게 재창조한 결과물들을 만들어낸다. ‘연꽃’으로 시작되어 이후에는 주변과의 관계에 주목하며 여러 가지 꽃들로 확장시켰다. 정체성을 탐구하며 줄곧 내면으로만 향하던 시선이 주변으로 이동한 것이다. 유미연의 꽃은 특별하거나 희귀한 꽃을 재현하지 않는다. 그렇기에 우리의 일상에서 크게 동떨어진 것은 아니지만, 그렇다고 이것을 평범한 오브제라고 간주하기는 힘들다. 특히 상식을 넘어서는 거대한 꽃이 우리의 일상적인 눈높이를 부정하는 위치에 놓이게 되었을 때 더욱 비현실적으로 다가온다. 평범함을 넘어서는 그것들의 일탈적인 확대는 분명 우리에게 어떤 해석의 여지를 남기고도 있는 듯하다.

Miyeon Yu uses her own name — “Mi-yeon,” meaning “beautiful lotus” — as a linguistic symbol to express her identity. Her visual language begins with the act of creating a “lotus flower”. Yu’s distinctive play between signifier and signified intertwines with her artistic methodology, resulting in large-scale recreation of flowers. The “lotus,” which marked the beginning of her exploration, gradually developed into depictions of various other flowers. As she began to focus on the relationships between herself and her surroundings, her gaze, once fixed inward in search of identity, turned outward toward the external world. 

Yu’s flowers do not depict rare or exotic species; rather, they are not separated from everyday life. Yet, they resist being fully regarded as ordinary object. Especially when rendered in monumental scale, these flowers exceed the viewer’s normal field of perception, appearing strikingly surreal. Their extraordinary enlargement — a kind of deviation from the ordinary — leaves space for open interpretation.
